She didn’t speak well of Tokue and her illness and harbored prejudice against her. She treated Sentaro poorly and would guilt him into staying at the shop. I didn’t like the wife of Doraharu’s owner, who was a terrible person.

Wakana, a schoolgirl and a customer at Doraharu, who played a major role in the book, was also a good character. He was a good person and stood up for Tokue.

He was determined to carry on making it, because if he did not, it would disappear from the world.

It is no wonder that she affected Sentaro so much.Īnd there was something else too, something far more important to Sentaro: Tokue’s sweet bean paste. Despite Tokue’s difficult life, she exuded warmth and friendliness. It was heartbreaking to hear Tokue recount her past life and the many years she spent in misery due to her illness. I won’t reveal the illness as it is a spoiler, but I was appalled to see Tokue being treated differently despite the illness being treatable. The reason behind Tokue’s disfigured hands was due to an illness that caused Tokue to face discrimination and ostracisation from society. And thus began a story of friendship between the two that changed Sentaro’s life forever. However, her sweet bean paste, which is the main ingredient in dorayaki, was so delicious that Sentaro couldn’t help but keep her. Sentaro initially turned her away, hesitant to employ her due to her age and disfigured hands. Sweet Bean Paste began with Tokue approaching Sentaro for a job at Doraharu, a shop where Sentaro sold dorayaki.

She begins to teach him her craft, but as their friendship flourishes, social pressures become impossible to escape and Tokue’s dark secret is revealed, with devastating consequences. Tokue makes the best sweet bean paste Sentaro has ever tasted. Into his life comes Tokue, an elderly woman with disfigured hands and a troubled past. With only the blossoming of the cherry trees to mark the passing of time, he spends his days in a tiny confectionery shop selling dorayaki, a type of pancake filled with sweet bean paste. He has a criminal record, drinks too much, and his dream of becoming a writer is just a distant memory.
